How to Encourage English Department Students to Speak More Often and Confidently

English is very important for English Department Students. Students have to master English in writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Many students have difficulties in speaking. There are many reasons why it is difficult for them. One of the reasons is lack of practice. They do not speak confidently because they rarely speak in English. They are ashamed to speak in English, because they think they are not good at it. There are many ways to encourage them to speak more often and more confidently.

Firstly, explain to the students why speaking English is important for them. By explaining the advantages of it, the students will realize that they need to speak English more often and confidently. They will learn to speak English seriously and happily without coercion.

Secondly, make the lessons fun. They can study while playing games, such as doing competitions where they repeat songs or read aloud. Playing games will get them in the spirit for winning. They will have courage to speak.

Thirdly, make situations which force them to speak English. For instance, they have to speak English in the class room. If they do not obey the rule, give them a punishment.

Fourthly, give them tasks to practice English. Writing a speaking log is very helpful to them. For example, they have to practice English every day with a partner. They can discuss anything in English. It makes them enjoy the tasks because they can discuss whatever they want.

Fifthly, give them a reward. By giving them a reward they will be happy and spirit to practice English. A reward makes them feel valued. Giving a compliment is one example of a reward.

English Department Students are supposed to speak English more often and confidently. They have to practice more often to make their speaking better. If their speaking skill is better they will speak more confidently. They will speak more often and more confidently if they feel capable, so that they do not make as many mistakes when speaking English.

Woman’s Time to Break the Limits 

     Purworejo- Silatda IMMawati (Hospitality of region between women of Muhammadiyah Students Association) of Central Java was held at Pendopo of Purworejo Regency on Friday, May 11 2018. The theme was Revitalisasi Peran IMMawati Jawa Tengah dalam Mewujudkan Gerakan Pencerahan (Revitalizing the Role of IMMawati of Central Java in Realizing the Movement of Enlightenment). The participants were IMMawati in Central Java, several officials, and students of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo.

     The event began with opening. After the opening, there was a recitation of the holy Qur’an by IMMawati Lutfah. After she finished the recitation, the participants had to stand for singing songs: Indonesia Raya, Mars Muhammadiyah, and Mars IMM. The next was reading poetry by a student of SLB (Extraordinary School) in Purworejo who won Poetry Reading Contest in Central Java, Sekar Septiana Sari. After that, there were greetings by: PC IMM Purworejo, IMMawan Fayd; Chairman DPD IMM of Central Java, IMMawan Abdul Wahid; Chairman PDM Purworejo, Drs. Pudjiono; PWM Central Java, Dandung Danadi; and Tasks Executor of Governor of Central Java, Drs. H. Heru Sudjatmoko, M.si. The next activity on the agenda was closing.

     After closing, there was a Dialogue of Nationality. The theme was Wawasan Kebhinekaan sebagai Paradigma Gerakan Perempuan: Upaya Perempuan dalam Mengentaskan Masalah Sosial (Insight of Diversity as A Paradigm of the Women’s Movement: Women’s Efforts in Eradicating Social Problems). There were two speakers in this event. The first speaker was Denty Eka Widi Pratiwi, S.E., M.H and the second was Dra. Hj. Sri Gunarti, S.H., M.H. They discussed issues about feminism where women are second class and seem have no chance to be equal as men. The role of women is limited until now. They just have a bit role in many fields. The speakers emphasized that women have to be spirit and active, so that they can break the limits.

     After each speech, speakers and participants had the opportunity to discuss and to speak about feminism issues that usually happen in daily life. They also talked about the way to improve the role of women to eradicate social problems.

     Anggra, one of the committee members of the event said, “This event is to build advancement IMMawati of Central Java. It makes hospitality closely intertwined between branches of the organization, builds networks between them, makes the role of them recognized, and forms the corporation of them, ’’. ''This event is successful. We hope Silatda IMMawati continues to run and present in other cities,’’ she added.

     The event lasted for more or less five hours. It ended at noon.
